Biography

Manuela E. Gomes is since May 2024 a Full Professor of BioEngineering at the Institute for Medical and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) of the University of Porto and Leader of the Research Group on Regenerative Medicine and 3D Tissue Modelling at the Unit for Multidisciplinary Research in Biomedicine (UMIB-ICBAS). Her Education started at the University of Porto (Materials Engineering) and was continued at the University of Minho (MSc in Polymer eng in collaboration with the company Isotis in The Netherlands and a PhD in Tissue Engineering in collaboration with Rice University, USA). Most of her previous career was developed at the university of Minho. She was a founder member of the 3B’s Research Group and she was the first President of the I3Bs Research Institute, funded in 2018. Previously she was Associate Professor and Vice-President of the I3Bs Research Institute of the University of Minho, Portugal.. Manuela Gomes is Fellow of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (FTERM, class 2021). She is an active member of TERMIS, haveing served as member of the TERMIS-EU Endorsement Committee (2011-2014); Council member of the TERMIS-EU (2014-2017), chair of the TERMIS-EU Communication and Outreach Committee (2016-2018), Chair of the TERMIS- Global Editorial Committee, Member at large of the TERMIs-Global, Chair of the Membership Committee and Member oft he MAL. As of this week (June 2024) she is Chair of the European Chapter of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS-EU);

Expertise

Manuela E. Gomes research interests currently focus on tendon tissue engineering strategies, namely in the development of scaffold materials and bioinks based on biodegradable natural origin polymers, stem cells sourcing and differentiation (using biochemical and physical methods, particularly magnetic stimulus). Manuela Gomes has been involved in numerous European and national/regional projects as PI or team member; She currently coordinates a Consolidator Grant (CoG) - MagTendon and a Proof of Concept (PoC) -BioCHIPS from the European Research Council (ERC), and a COST Action - TENET. Manuela Gomes is editor of 3 books and co-editor of the Tissue Engineering Encyclopaedia (Elsevier, 2019) and author of 260 full papers, 51 book chapters, 8 patents and has delivered 60 lectures in international conferences. She is Ambassador in Portugal to the European Orthopaedic Research Society (EORS).
