Biography

Serrano studied Chemical Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). In 2005, he was awarded the European Ph.D. degree after a long stay at Université Paris-Saclay with a Marie Curie Fellowship. He currently works as a Full Professor of Bioengineering at the Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir (UCV). Furthermore, in the teaching managing sector, he has been twice Vice Dean of Biotechnology and Head of the Applied and Technological Science Department during 5 years. In the research area, he is currently the Principal Investigator of the Biomaterials and Bioengineering Lab (SerranoBBlab) at the Department of Biotechnology. He has authored 5 patents and more than 150 publications, including papers in major journals such as Advanced Functional Materials, ACS Nano, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Bioengineering & Translational Medicine, Additive Manufacturing, Science of the Total Environment, Autoimmnunity Reviews, International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, etc. He was predoctoral student at the National Technical University of Athens and at the Laboratoire de Physiques des Solides, CNRS, France. He was postdoctoral researcher at the King’s College London. He was Visiting Professor at NTNU Nowegian University of Science and Technology and the University of Pennsylvania in the USA. He speaks five languages (Spanish, Valencian, English, French and Italian). In the private sector, he has been co-founding member of the spin-off company Metis Biomaterials SL. He has received multiple research awards and has been included in the Stanford University's "World Ranking of Top 2% Scientists" database for the past four years (2021-2024). In the most recent ranking, he was placed at No. 29,530, positioning him within the top 1% of 223,153 leading researchers worldwide.

Expertise

Serrano is a leading expert in antimicrobial biomaterials, with significant contributions to the development of materials with antimicrobial functionality for biomedical applications. His research focuses on creating advanced antimicrobial solutions to combat infections, including those caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, fungi and viruses. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his research group played a pivotal role in designing cutting-edge face shields and face masks capable of inactivating SARS-CoV-2 within seconds, as well as multidrug-resistant bacteria. These antimicrobial face masks, produced by Visor Medical S.L. (a division of Visor Fall Arrest Nets S.L.), represent a major advancement in protective equipment. His lab has engineered a wide range of antimicrobial medical devices, including antimicrobial scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, designed to promote bone regeneration while preventing infections; antimicrobial meshes for hernia repair, enhancing patient recovery by reducing infection risks; and a bio-based antimicrobial lipstick, an innovative cosmetic solution that prevents microbial infections transmitted through the lips. Serrano’s Lab has demonstrated that carbon nanomaterials offer a promising alternative for combating a wide range of microorganisms. His work in this area has been published in high-impact journals such as ACS Nano and Advanced Functional Materials, further solidifying his expertise in the field of antimicrobial biomaterials.
