Akhilesh Rai is an investigator at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), University of Coimbra. He has done PhD from the National Chemical Laboratory, University of Pune, Pune, India. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Nottingham Trent University U.K. and University Catholique de Louvain, Belgium from 2007 to 2011. He has been involved in several European Union projects. He has more than 15 years of experience in the area of inorganic/organic nanomaterials, antimicrobial nanomaterials, antimicrobial coatings, brain targeting and dental implants.
He is a recipient of the prestigious BluePharma-University of Coimbra Innovation Award in 2015. He is also a co-founder of CureMat Technologies which deals in the development of novel wound dressings for diabetic wound healing. He has published 40 research papers, 4 book chapters and 3 patents with cumulative citations of more than 7000. He is co-editor of the book entitled Nanoparticles and Plant-Microbe Interactions: an environmental perspective, which is published by Elsevier.
Expertise
Dr. Rai has expertise in synthesising various compositions of inorganic and organic nanoparticles and biomaterials for regenerative medicine applications. Currently, his research focus involves the synthesis of near-infrared responsive nanomaterials for synergistic antimicrobial action and drug delivery. Additionally, his research encompasses the applications of nanomaterials in the treatments of infected skin, oral infections and drug delivery to the brain.
