Assistant Prof
Miguel CASTILHO
Eindhoven University of TechnologyBiography
Miguel Castilho is an Associate Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands. He leads a multidisciplinary group focused on biomaterial engineering and biofabrication for in vitro human disease models and in-situ tissue regeneration, particularly for musculoskeletal tissues. He has authored over 75 peer-reviewed articles, and his contributions have been recognized by various awards including the 2023 Jean Leray award from the European Society for Biomaterials and the 2024 Robert Brown Award from the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society. In addition to research, he pioneered and coordinates a Biofabrication facility and spearheads a collaborative Master's program in regenerative medicine between Eindhoven and Utrecht, educating students from different backgrounds, including engineering and biology.
Expertise
Development of design & fabrication technologies that enable the local control of (bio) material composition and structure across multiple length scales is fundamental to understand complex regenerative processes in the human body; as well as to develop approaches for functional restoration of damaged&diseased tissues and organs. To address this challenge, Castilho team uses a material-by-design approach, combining advanced Additive Manufacturing technologies and computational design, to develop instructive materials for regenerative medicine, particularly of musculoskeletal tissues, like bone, bone marrow and muscle. Castilho’s research is interdisciplinary, bringing together engineers, materials scientists and cell biologists. An important focus area of the team is on exploring opportunities for translation of instructive materials in human clinics.
