Professor Hélder A. Santos is Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BBT) at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), University of Groningen, The Netherlands. He also visiting Researcher and Group Leader at the University of Helsinki (Finland), Visiting Professor, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (China), Visiting Professor, University of Tartu (Estonia), Honorary Adjunct Fellow, University of Technology Sydney (Australia), Chairman and co-founder of Capsamedix Oy and Medixmicro Oy, and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Professor Santos’ research lies at the interface of nanotechnology, biomaterials, and medicine, focusing on the rational design of multifunctional and biomimetic nanomedicines for drug delivery, RNA therapeutics, tissue regeneration, and cancer immunotherapy. His interdisciplinary work integrates materials science, bioengineering, and pharmaceutical sciences to develop advanced nano- and micro-platforms for precision and personalized medicine.
He has published more than 600 peer-reviewed articles, with an h-index above 103, and has been repeatedly recognized as one of the Highly Cited Researchers (Clarivate, 2020–2024). His research has been supported by national and international funding agencies, including the European Research Council (ERC), Academy of Finland, and Horizon Europe.
Professor Santos has received numerous distinctions, including the Finnish Pharmaceutical Society Award, the University of Helsinki Award for Internationalization, and the Controlled Release Society (CRS) Young Investigator Award. He has served on several editorial boards, including Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews and Journal of Controlled Release, and is a frequent keynote and plenary speaker at leading international conferences in nanomedicine and biomaterials.
Dedicated to fostering global collaboration, he actively leads partnerships across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, mentoring the next generation of scientists in biomedical innovation. His long-term vision is to translate nanotechnology-driven research into clinically relevant solutions that improve patient outcomes and transform healthcare.
Expertise
Prof. Hélder A. Santos is a leading researcher in nanomedicine, biomaterials, and drug delivery systems, with internationally recognized expertise in the design, engineering, and translational development of multifunctional nanosystems for precision and regenerative medicine. His work integrates materials science, pharmaceutical technology, and bioengineering to create advanced therapeutic platforms capable of controlled and targeted delivery of small molecules, proteins, nucleic acids, and cells.
Prof. Santos’s expertise spans the fabrication of hybrid nanocarriers, stimuli-responsive systems, and biomimetic and tissue-specific delivery technologies for applications in cancer therapy, cardiovascular regeneration, and immunotherapy. His group has also pioneered the development of 3D disease models and organ-on-a-chip systems to bridge preclinical research with clinical translation.
He has authored over 600 peer-reviewed publications, several book chapters, and holds patents in nanotechnology-enabled medicine. His work has been recognized with numerous international awards and high citation impact (h-index >103).
As Chair and Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BBT) at the University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, Prof. Santos leads interdisciplinary collaborations between academia, healthcare, and industry, driving innovation at the interface of nanotechnology, biotechnology, and translational therapeutics.
