Biography

Dr. Luis García Fernández obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Castilla la Mancha in 2004 and a Ph.D. with European mention in 2010. After completing his Ph.D., he carried out a postdoctoral stay at the Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP) in Mainz (Germany) for 3 years. In 2015, he returned to Spain to collaborate on a European project, and since 2019, he has been enjoying a contract to access the Spanish system of science, technology, and innovation with the Biomedical Research Networking Center (CIBER) belonging to the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII). During his scientific career, he has published 35 scientific articles (32 in Q1 and 15 in D1) focused on research in tissue engineering, new polymeric drugs, and controlled drug release systems. Most of his research has been carried out through participation in different international projects and collaborations with more than 10 high-level international institutions. The results obtained from these researchs have allowed him to be a co-author of 3 patents, as well as participating in more than 50 international conferences. He participates as a scientific evaluator for Dirección de Evaluación y Acreditación de la Agencia Andaluza del Conocimiento (DEVA-AAC) and as a reviewer for different high-impact scientific journals. Recently, he has been the editor of a special issue in the Polymers journal. From this special issue a summary book has been edited thanks to its high scientific interest. The scientific evolution during his career has allowed him to establish different connections with industry, with companies such as ALODIA Farmacéutica, VISCOFAN, or BioIberica. These relationships have materialized in the granting of various transfer projects to the company (POLYNARED, PROBONEWFOOD, and RADIOPROTECT Projects).

Expertise

My research focuses on the development of innovative lines of study in tissue regeneration and advanced treatments using hydrogels based on natural polymers. These applications include nanoparticles for targeted and controlled delivery of therapeutic agents, 3D scaffolds for tissue regeneration, drug delivery systems, and stimulus-responsive smart systems. Between 2010 and 2025, I published 40 scientific articles, 36 of which appeared in Q1 journals and 15 in D1 journals, mainly addressing topics related to tissue engineering, novel polymeric drugs, and controlled drug delivery systems. Most of my research has been carried out through active participation in various international projects and collaborations with high-level institutions worldwide. In addition, I am the author of 5 book chapters and editor of 1 book. I have participated in over 40 international conferences and 6 national conferences, including 3 invited talks. Throughout my academic career, I have gained extensive international experience through research stays during both my predoctoral (Trento, Italy – 6 months; Mainz, Germany – 4 months) and postdoctoral stages (Mainz, Germany – 35 months; Italy – 12 months). These experiences have strengthened my ability to work confidently in interdisciplinary and international environments.
