Dr.
Alessandro POLINI
CNR NanotecBiography
Alessandro Polini is a Researcher at the Institute of Nanotechnology CNR-NANOTEC, IT. He has wide experience in the field of biomaterials for tissue engineering, manufacturing and design of Organ-on-a-chip and LoC systems, materials sciences and microfabrication. He has carried out research in these fields both in Italy and abroad (Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and Harvard Medical School in US, Radboud University in the Netherlands), supervising several PhD and Master students. He won numerous national and international awards and honors, founded two start-up companies (SM&T S.r.l. and AI-TWIN S.r.l.) focused on innovative biomaterials and organ-on-chip, respectively, has been involved in numerous EU and national projects. His research has been covered by numerous national and international newspapers, magazines and TV broadcasters.
Expertise
Fabrication techniques – Electrospinning; 3D (bio) printing; stereolithography (DLP); Freeze casting; Clean room micro- and nanofabrication processes (single and multi-level optical lithography, wet/dry etching, metal evaporation); Clean room-free microfabrication processes (soft lithography: REM, MIMIC, μ-contact printing).
Metrology: Morphological characterization (SEM, TEM, profilometer, AFM); Chemical characterization (UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, XPS); Mechanical characterization (compressive/tensile tests); Thermal characterization (TGA, DSC, rheometry); Biological characterization (in vitro biocompatibility and differentiation studies).
Topics – Instructive biomaterials for tissue regeneration; Surface biofunctionalization (polymers, ceramics); Bioinspired materials; Bioanalytical microfluidic tools; Design and fabrication of organs-on-a-chip microfluidic platforms; Light-emitting polymer fibers for optical applications.
