Liliana MOREIRA TEIXEIRA

Biography

Dr. Liliana Moreira Teixeira is Associate Professor at the Department of Advanced Organ Bioengineering and Therapeutics, University of Twente, The Netherlands. With extensive expertise in biomaterials development for tissue regeneration, particularly in musculoskeletal repair, Liliana focuses on engineering biomimetic matrices to support tissue healing and regeneration. Her research integrates organ-on-chip technologies to create physiologically relevant in vitro models that mimic native tissue environments, enabling precision medicine approaches. Previously, Liliana served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Twente and Utrecht University, leading research on bioengineered microenvironments for musculoskeletal regeneration and organ-on-chip platforms. As Senior Postdoctoral Researcher at Maastricht University and the Wyss Institute at Harvard Medical School, she has developed instructive materials to steer microenvironments, including vascularized bone marrow-on-a-chip, cancer and lung models, to study tissue remodeling and therapeutic screening. Liliana holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Twente, complemented by an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Porto and a BSc in Applied Biology from the University of Minho. Her pioneering work has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Aspasia Award from NWO (2021) and the Cells Tissues Organs Young Investigator Award (2020), among others. An experienced educator, Liliana coordinates and lectures courses in Microphysiological Systems, Biomedical Materials Engineering, and Advanced Anatomy & Physiology. They hold a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO) and serves on the editorial and advisory boards of Lab on a Chip Technologies, Micromachines, and In Vitro Models. Regarding positions of trust, Liliana plays a crucial role in professional leadership as Vice-Chair of the Ethics Committee TNW/ET at the University of Twente, a board member of the European Organ-on-Chip Society (EUROoCS), and Founder & Scientific Lead of the Organ-on-Chip Center Twente. Her research continues to drive innovation in organs-on-chips and biomaterials for musculoskeletal repair, regenerative medicine, and personalized healthcare solutions.
