Professor
Javier LLORCA
Biography
Prof. Javier LLorca obtained his BEng/MSc in Civil Engineering with honors at the Technical University of Madrid in 1983 and his PhD in Materials Science at the same institution in 1986. He was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science of the Technical University of Madrid in 1987 and Professor in 1995 and, since 2006, he is the head of the research group on “Advanced Structural Materials and Nanomaterials”. In 2007, he founded the IMDEA Materials Institute and was his director until 2017, when he became the Scientific Director.
Prof. LLorca, a Fulbright scholar, is a Fellow of the European Mechanics Society and of the Materials Research Society and a member of the Academia Europaea. He has held visiting positions Brown University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Indian Institute of Science and China Central South University. He has received various numerous awards, including the Research Award from the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, The Distinguished Scientist Award from the Structural Materials Division of TMS, the Research award from the Technical University of Madrid and Career Award from the Spanish Society of Materials (SOCIEMAT).
Prof. LLorca is currently Executive Editor of Modelling and Simulation in Materials Science and Engineering and editor of Materials Research Letters. In addition, he is Associate Editor of Composites Science and Technology, Materials Science and Engineering A, International Journal of Multiscale Computational Engineering, Integrating Materials and Manufacturing Innovation, International Journal of Engineering Sciences and Advanced Theory and Simulation. He chairs the European Mechanics of Materials Conference Committee.
Expertise
His research interests are focused in the development of new materials for engineering applications in transport, energy and health. The processing-structure-properties relationships of materials are established by means of different computational tools (ab initio, cluster expansion, molecular mechanics, dislocation dynamics, phase field, computational thermodynamics, computational mechanics, etc.) and multiscale modeling strategies (transition state theory, homogenization, etc.) as well as in situ and in operando characterization techniques. Particular emphasis is paid to the interaction among biological, chemical and mechanical processes. This information is used to design new materials that are manufactured by means of advanced processing techniques (including additive manufacturing of metallic alloys, polymers and composites, magnetron sputtering, etc.).
His current research interests – within the framework of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering – are aimed at the design of advanced materials for engineering applications in transport, health care (implants) as well as energy (catalysis), so new materials can be designed, tested and optimized in silico before they are actually manufactured in the laboratory.
