Biography

Dr. Maja D. Markovic, PhD in Chemical Engineering, was born on April 12, 1989, in Kragujevac, Serbia. She completed her BSc (2012) and MSc (2013) in Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, University of Belgrade, Serbia, receiving top grades and awards including the “Panta S. Tutundžić” award and a scholarship from the Serbian Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development. She earned her PhD in 2020. with a thesis on “Release kinetics of a poorly water-soluble substance from carriers based on poly(methacrylic acid), casein and liposomes”. Dr. Markovic has professional experience in both industry and academia. She worked as a technologist at company Herba Svet d.o.o. in Serbia (2014–2018), contributing to standardization and production of herbal formulations. Since 2018, she has been working at the Innovation Center of the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, University of Belgrade, where she leads laboratory research, designs experiments, analyzes data, and mentors students. Her research focuses on bio-based and sustainable polymer materials, including hydrogels for controlled release and biomedical applications. She contributed to multiple national projects, including III 46010 (2018-2020), OI-172062 (2018-2020), PROMIS (#GRANT No 6062612) (2020-2022), and Step2PolyGreen (#GRANT No 6793) (2023-2025), and spent two months at the AO Research Institute in Davos (2023) conducting experiments related to hydrogel biocharacterization. She has several publications in collaboration with national and international researchers and was part of the organizing committee of two international conferences: IcETRAN (2019) and ExcellMater 2024 - Innovative biomaterials for novel medical devices (2024).

Expertise

Her research involves design of sustainable polymer materials obtained by using natural recyclable and low-cost resources, such as cellulosic materials, casein, crotonic acid etc. Her research is focused on design of the hybrid polymer materials with outstanding properties intended for biomedical applications especially for drug delivery.
