Biography

Nieves Cubo Mateo is a Spanish engineer and researcher. A pioneer in the field of 3D tissue printing, she developed a low-cost printer for the generation of human tissues that can be subsequently implanted, in support of regenerative medicine. She was the first person to make functional human skin with a 3D printing machine from human cells and materials. She graduated in Electronic and Automatic Engineering from the Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M) in 2013. He has a Master's Degree in Materials Science and Engineering (2013-2014) from UC3M and a Master's Degree in Teaching Specialized in Experimental Sciences and Technology (2015-2016). ) by the Alfonso X el Sabio University (UAX). She is a Doctor from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the UCM (2016-2020). Her Doctoral Thesis was developed at the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and at the Technical University of Dresden (TUD), where she worked for part of this last period. Previously, she worked at UC3M, in the Department of Biomedical and Aerospace Engineering as Teaching and Research Staff (Bioengineering) and at EXOVITE, a technological innovation company in medical tools and procedures (Research + Development + Innovation, in 3D printing applied to medicine ). During 2017 and 2018, she remained at UC3M as Research Teaching Staff, developing the technology and doing in vitro and in vivo validations of dermal-epidermal equivalents deposited with the printer. Since then, her work has been focused on the development of new bioinks and cell deposition processes that allow her to generate new tissues with the aim of achieving low-cost, replicable systems that can be reproduced in other parts of the world.

Expertise

She has collaborated with the Technical University of Dresden (TUD) and with the German satellite and aerospace engineering company (OHB) for the adaptation of these processes in order to be used in space exploration missions, within the framework of an European Space Agency (ESA) project. The goal of this work was to develop materials that can be obtained directly from humans, or from plants that can be easily grown and processed in isolated areas with limited resources (as Mars, or Earth isolated areas). She was Associate Professor at the University of Valencia from 2011 to 2022, teaching Regenerative Medicine, and Robotics in the last academic year. She is currently Professor at the Antonio de Nebrija University, where she also conducts research activities as IP of the ARIES Research group. She is the Director of the Bachelor's Degree in Bioengineering, and the responsible of the Space Exploration Club of the university.
