R. Geoff RICHARDS profile

Prof. Richards has worked at the AO Foundation in Davos, Switzerland since 1991. Since 2009 he has been the director of AO Research Institute Davos with ~130 multidisciplinary scientists. Geoff has been a member of the ESB since 1993 when his supervisor Prof Berton Rahn hosted ESB in Davos. In 2004 Geoff won the ESB Jean Leray Award. In 2009 he co-organised ESB in Lausanne. His team (under the leadership of Matteo D`Este) hosted ESB in Davos in 2023. In 2024 Geoff won the ESB Klaas de Groot Award – The Klaas de Groot Award was established as a prestigious recognition of scientists who have shown a distinct ability to provide excellent mentorship and guidance to young researchers, helping them to establish their own independent careers (Award presentation, Sept 2025, Turin). In 1999 Geoff co-founded eCM journal, arguably the first open access online journal in the world, a pioneer in open access publishing. This concept disrupted the publishing field in science, which is now standard practice. In 2016 he founded the International College of Fellows for the International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies. He is past president of TERMIS Global (Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society) and past chair of the Chair of International Fellows of TERMIS. He organized TERMISEU in June 2017 in Davos. Geoff holds a lifetime Professorship at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Freiburg (DE) and honorary professorships at Cardiff, Aberystwyth and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has been awarded several Fellowships, the most prestigious being Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales ((FLSW). He is also a Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE), International Orthopaedic Research (FIOR), Orthopaedic Research Society (FORS) and Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (FTERM). He is ranked among the 1% most-cited scientists in the world
