Biography

Nathan obtained his Master’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Antwerp in 2017, completing an industrial Master’s thesis at Janssen Pharmaceutica. He then began a PhD as an FWO-SB fellow in the PBM research group under the supervision of Prof. Sandra Van Vlierberghe, focusing on the development of an in vitro liver model for DILI detection. During his PhD, he gained additional expertise in liver organoid culture through research stays at the Roger Williams Institute of Hepatology in London and the STEAM group in Utrecht. After obtaining his PhD in 2023, Nathan joined the University of Nottingham as a postdoctoral researcher, working on the development of an intestinal patch in the RMCT group under the supervision of Prof. Felicity Rose. He is currently an FWO Junior Postdoctoral Fellow in the PBM group, under the supervision of Prof. Sandra Van Vlierberghe, where he works on liver tissue engineering in collaboration with Bart Spee and Kerstin Schneeberger at the University of Utrecht. His research focuses on developing stimuli-responsive materials for the culture of intrahepatic cholangiocyte organoids, combining material development with organoid culture and volumetric bioprinting towards the development of artificial liver tissue.

Expertise

Nathan’s expertise lies in the development of materials for liver tissue engineering. He is currently working on stimuli-responsive, photo-crosslinkable materials for the culture of intrahepatic cholangiocyte organoids. He integrates this with volumetric bioprinting to advance the development of vascularised liver constructs.
