Biography

I am Assistant Professor at Politecnico di Milano – Dept. of Chemistry, Material and Chemical Engineering “G. Natta” (Italy). I graduated in Chemical Engineering and, in January 2018, I received my Ph.D. in Industrial Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. I spent almost four years as Assistant Professor in Applied Physical Chemistry at University Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, working on the design of smart multi-functional polymeric scaffolds (hydrogels and nanoparticles) for controlled drug delivery in tumors (renal and ovarian cancer) and metabolic disorders (NAFLD) and for cell targeting. I developed the fundamental skills in cell culture, microscopy, flow cytometry and cell staining. I also spent visiting research periods at ETH Zurich (Macromolecular Engineering Laboratory) and University of Cambridge (Department of Neuroscience). For my research activities I have been awarded with the following awards: European Doctorate Award by European Society of Biomaterials (ESB), Trainee Travel Award/Italian Young Scientists by Italian Society for Biomaterial (SIB) at the 10th World Biomaterials Congress in Montréal (Canada), and Nanoinnovation’s Got Talent at NanoInnovation 2019 in Rome (Italy).

Expertise

My main research fields are related to the chemical functionalization of polymers and the design of three-dimensional smart polymeric systems as highly biocompatible tools for controlled drug, gene and cell delivery, in nanomedicine and tissue engineering. Special focuses are: i) drug targeting in inflamed/injured cells of tumoral scenarios, through the synthesis of nanoparticles and nanogels; ii) continuous in-flow production of nanoparticles through microfluidic devices, to overcome the shortcomings of the conventional batch syntheses, and iii) formulation and 3D printing of bioinks (hydrogels)
