Mariana MAGALHÃES
i3s/ Bioengineered 3D Microenvironments GroupBiography
I graduated in Bioengineering (MSc) with a specialization in Molecular Bioengineering from the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP) in 2021. During my Master's, I went to Utrecht (The Netherlands) for an Erasmus+ internship at University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC). There, at Dr. Jos Malda's Orthopaedics group, I explored different 3D Bioprinting approaches and their effects on cellular behavior. My final master thesis was conducted in the Bioengineered 3D Microenvironments Group at i3S, under the supervision of Dr. Sílvia Bidarra. The project focused on bioengineering a 3D breast tumor angiogenesis model. After that, I was selected for a 12-month Research Fellowship at the Bioengineered 3D Microenvironments group, during which I developed cell-instructive hydrogels with tuneable physical/biochemical properties to mimic ECM and cell-matrix interactions. In the end of 2022, I enrolled the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Engineering at FEUP. under the supervision of Dr. Cristina Barrias. My work focuses on the development of pre-vascularized 3D models for soft tissue engineering and therapeutic regeneration.
